2/05/2015 · Here is how I taught students in my 11th grade English class to think outside of the box when writing their opening sentence to their memoir.
- The first sentence in an action/adventure novel I hope to sell. I know it’s not “The great American novel” but most of those are gathering dust in a drawer somewhere. I just wanted to write something that’s entertaining for the reader and might make a little money for the publisher and myself.
- Not sure what category the 2nd one fits into, but the idea was to make the audience see me as being on their side, and to make them wonder what the shared goal was. Whatever type of opening you choose, I think there’s a lot of benefit in using a strong opening *line* to launch right into your talk.
- A better piece of advice is to make your opening line unusual, unexpected or somehow arresting. Do that and you’re pretty much guaranteed to have a hooked reader on your hands. Do that and you’re pretty much guaranteed to have a hooked reader on your hands.
- Good lines are what matter, not their location in the book. Go back and look at your favorite literature. Most of mine begin with ordinary lines. The opening sentence and paragraph do not truly need to stand out. All the better if they do, but it is not necessary.
